5 Tips for Effective Volunteering

Every year we welcome dozens of first-time volunteers into the field. These five habits consistently separate a smooth first assignment from a rough one.

Five things to get right

1. Show up 15 minutes before your shift — orientation happens fast, and you don't want to miss it.
2. Bring closed-toe shoes and a refillable water bottle; field sites rarely have amenities nearby.
3. Ask your team lead one clarifying question before starting, not five during the task.
4. Photograph your work only with explicit consent from the people in frame.
5. Debrief with your coordinator before you leave — it's how we improve the next assignment for everyone.
